Barack Obama promised in 2008 to fundamentally transform the United States --- and he has. However, it didn't happen overnight. The foundation for his transformation was created one hundred years ago by early 20th century progressives. And in the 1980s, the Tides Foundation finished the job, gathering together activists who figured out how to change America from the inside out.
With his new book Liars coming out late summer, Glenn has been researching Woodrow Wilson and other progressives from this era.
"I'm looking at these guys, and I'm seeing them in a totally different light now. I'm really seeing the guys in the 1880s and the early 20th century as the new Founders. And last night, I wrote in my diary just that, "Where are these guys? Where are the thinkers now?" I mean, these were the biggest thinkers of the late 1800s and early 20th century. They were the college professors. They were the titans of philosophical thought at the time. They were the titans of governmental thought. Where are those guys? They put together a plan. And they knew where they were headed," Glenn said.
While progressives perfectly executed their 100-year plan, conservatives only seem to focus on the next four to eight years.
"We don't seem to have the patience that progressives do," Co-host Pat Gray said.
So what should conservatives do?
"You know, I've been saying this for years. And, you know, I'm not the guy to lead this, but I don't think there's anybody else stepping to the plate," Glenn said. "We have to get with the people who are the greatest thinkers in conservative Libertarian minds today. Get the people of faith, but not the old-line faith, not progressives, not the people who would vote for Donald Trump or who would endorse him today. The people who understand liberty. Get the people of faith. Get the Libertarians that understand that it's not all about weed; it's about the principles of freedom."
Glenn and his co-hosts tossed out a few names that would fit the bill, like Mary Matalin, Mark Levin, Robbie George, Erick Erickson, George Will and Jonah Goldberg.
"Put them together in a room and say, "Okay, guys, we need a 100-year plan," Glenn said. "What are we striving for in the next two years, four years, 10 years, 20 years, 50 years? Where are we going to be?"
A think tank of the best conservative minds would be a good place to begin turning the country around and return to our Founding Principles. Only liberty-loving, constitutional conservatives who've not sold their soul to an election or a party need apply.
