Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) showed some cojones this morning by appearing on the radio to explain his vote for John Boehner for Speaker of the House. Glenn spent the past twenty-four hours asking his audience to call their congressman and tell them if they vote for Boehner, they will not be getting their votes again when they seek re-election. Knowing he would be entering a combative arena, Chris still agreed to come on the radio show. He may have the guts to come on the show, but he may have lost his soul.
For anyone who doesn't know, Chris Stewart and Glenn have been friends for a while. Glenn interviewed him several times during his campaign in 2012, and even published his book series 'Wrath & Righteousness'. Needless to say, a vote for Boehner would seem to be a betrayal of everything Glenn believed his friend stood for.
"You have some nerve calling, and I appreciate that. We were just saying off the air that we promised you as your friend that we would come to Washington to pull you out of Washington before you lost your soul entirely. I'm not kidding, Chris. We were talking about -- we're gassing up the car. We're talking about firing up the jet and flying over there to pull you out of that cesspool because we're afraid you're losing your way," Glenn told him.
"I'm glad I would make your list of people you would want to save," said Chris.
Glenn proceeded to go into a long list of Boehner's affronts to any true conservative.
Chris countered, "I think in the time we have here, we can’t go back and review the last two, or four, or six years of votes you may or may not agree with him on. But the bottom line is this: I think we should be celebrating today, and it’s discouraging to me that instead this has become such a divisive day. We had a great election in November. We have a united Congress and a united Senate now. For the first time we have a united front where we can oppose President Obama."
"Yeah, you're right. We have a united Congress, and they're giving the green light to the President on amnesty. They're giving the green light on the CROmnibus. That's a trillion dollars, Chris. A trillion dollars," Glenn shot back.
Chris disagreed, claiming that Boehner and the rest of the GOP were waiting to fight things like an amnesty plan when there would be a Republican Senate to support them.
Glenn tried to appeal to his friend. "Chris, you find me in a brothel. And I'm friends with all the prostitutes. And I'm friends with the madam. And I start telling youthat this brothel is helping with the city improvements. Chris, 'I'm not sleeping with the prostitutes.' I'm here setting up office in the brothel. Do you have a problem with me, Chris?"
"Well, it depends, Glenn. You know, how attractive are the young ladies in the brothel. Right?"
Wow.
"You told, us, Chris, to come down on you like a bag of bricks if we ever felt you were losing your soul. This is bag of bricks time. We think you’re losing your soul.”
"Friends can say those kinds of things to each other. We get that," Chris said. "You and I have been friends for many more years than I've been in politics. I'm a new guy, Glenn. I've been in this for a couple of years now. Right? But I do think that there are times in which you and I agree that you've indicated that I haven't agreed with you. I think you've indicated that I've said or implied things that I certainly haven't. And I never have. And I think you and I agree on far more things than we disagree. And you're using this type of vote as some kind of a touchstone, as if it indicates disagreement on everything else, when we don't."
"It's the game, Chris. You're playing the game. Stop playing the game," he said.
The interview came to an end shortly after that, and the two parted as friends. Glenn, however, is still very worried about his friend.
