On Tuesday, 28-year-old Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, beat incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's 14th congressional district, in the most shocking upset of the political season. Ocasio-Cortez is an activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Who are the Democratic Socialists of America and what do they stand for?
"Democratic Socialist will not be covered [by the media] as the radicals that they are," said Glenn Beck on today's show. "They'll be covered as innovative, millennial-friendly upstarts with fresh ideas on how to rescue and save the country from the tyranny of white patriarchy and capitalism. It will be covered as a people's movement. See, this is what people have been clamoring for under the tyranny of President Trump."
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are not a political party but rather the largest socialist activist organization in the United States. Two groups that have been around since the early 1970's merged to form the DSA in 1982: The Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the New American Movement. The SDS is the group that produced such nefarious characters as Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn and the Weather Underground terrorist group that was responsible for 25 bombings in the early 1970's.
In 2011, the DFA joined Antifa in the 'Occupy Wall Street' Movement. They also support the Black Lives Matter movement and have raised funds for abortion rights movements.
"The DSA's crowning achievement, I would say, would have to be their push to make Bernie Sanders president in 2016," said Glenn. "Part of that effort included their 'People's Revolution 101' program, in which the Democratic Socialists of America sponsored seminars teaching people basic democratic socialist principles."
According to their website, the mission of the DSA is to bring about the end of capitalism through a commitment to "restructuring society. The 'DSA Constitution' reads, in part:
We are socialists because we share a vision of a humane social order based on popular control of resources and production, economic planning, equitable distribution, feminism, racial equality and non-oppressive relationships.
We are socialists because we are developing a concrete strategy for achieving that vision, for building a majority movement that will make democratic socialism a reality in America.
"There's no way around it, Socialism and Communism are kissing cousins. The only difference is when this concrete strategy begins to fail, that's when somebody grabs a gun and Socialism goes to Communism. Socialism really is just diet-Communism," said Glenn. "Putting 'democratic" before Socialist … makes it seem, I dunno, a little less Stalin and more Bernie Sanders."
