The term ‘deep state’ — once considered conspiracy theorists’ nonsense — made it’s mainstream debut Tuesday evening when President Donald Trump tweeted the following:

President Trump’s widely publicized mention of a “deep state” lent credence to ongoing theories that there is a secret ‘state within the state’ that really calls the shots, and — as far as Trump is concerned — is working to bring him down.
So … is there really such a thing as the Deep State?
All this week, Glenn is back at the chalkboard to take an in-depth look into the Deep State. In previous episodes (see part 1 here and part 2 here), Glenn discussed the two types of deep state: the “monolithic” and the “large bureaucratic machine.” The monolithic deep state, the kind you’d find in books and movies, does exists in certain parts of the world like Turkey and Egypt, but does not exist here in the US.
However, the “large bureaucratic machine” type of deep state is very much alive and well in America and Glenn explains exactly how in this video clip from today’s episode. “It’s big government that has created what many people are referring to now as the deep state,” said Glenn. Later he added, “Secrecy and an overall lack of transparency gives fuel to this machine, the fuel that it needs to operate, but big government ultimately created it.”
Glenn starts by giving several examples of how “the machine” works, naming the three main groups that operate both within and outside the country:
- Political appointees
- Career civil servants
- Private contractors
He goes on to explain the part the following government entities play in creating “a deep state bureaucratic hell.”
- The National Security Council
- The Internal Revenue Service
- The Environmental Protection Agency
- The United States Agency for International Development
