Yesterday, President Obama gave a speech on college loans. He claims that because he knows first-hand what student debt is like that he is more qualified to be President of the United States…
Here is what the President had to say:
“Michelle and I, we’ve been in your shoes, we didn’t come from wealthy families. When we graduated from college and law school, we had a mountain of debt. When we married, we got poor together. We added up our assets and there were no assets. And we added up our liabilities and there were a lot of liabilities basically in the form of student loans. Now check this out, I’m the President of the United States…We only finished paying off our student loans about 8 years ago.We paid more in student loans that we paid in our mortgage when we finally did buy a condo for the first 8 years of our marriage. We were paying more in student loans than we were paying for our mortgage. So we know what this is about.
And we were lucky to land good jobs with a steady income.
But we only finished paying off our student loans – check this out, alright? I’m the President of the United States. We only finished paying off our student loans about 8 years ago. That wasn’t that long ago. And that wasn’t easy especially because when we had Malia and Sasha, we were supposed to be saving up for their college educations and we’re still paying off our college education.
So we have to make college more affordable for our young people.”
Glenn pointed out that, ironically, while Obama is making the point that he understands college students, he’s had college loans, “he didn’t just read about this,” that he’s reads everything he says off of a teleprompter.
“You’re reading that you didn’t just read this,” Pat joked, “and still stuttering about it.”
“He’s like, I didn’t just get talking points,” Glenn said, “They actually typed it out and put it in what I’m reading to you right now.”
The crowd listening to the President’s speech, however, didn’t seem too bothered by the hypocrisy yesterday as they cheered along. Pat took note of how bizarre it is that the students he was speaking to were cheering and applauding the President’s ability to have student debt.
“I think we should tell the President that we don’t doubt his ability to get into a lot of debt,” Stu said. “There is no question that he’s really good at it.”
“Oh, you got a lot of debt. Really? Was it $5 trillion? Yeah, you thought the college loan was bad…” Glenn joked.
Later in the show, Glenn went on to discuss the part of the President’s speech where he discussed how he and Michelle struggled. President Obama told the crowd than he and the first lady added up their liabilities [student loans], and got poorer together.
“Wait, it’s like he married us, because that’s the same thing that’s happening with him now!” Stu joked.
Obama continued on in his speech to act as if the only way he and Michelle got out of debt and started doing really well was because they “got lucky.” It had nothing to do with working as lawyers or writing books, he just got lucky.
Glenn explained how that’s not what happened, and that’s not what a good leader does. Glenn explained how he got to where he is now through hard work and blessings from God.
Pat added, “he [President Obama] never says, ‘And you know what? You can do the same thing. You don't need me to create programs for you’.”
