During an appearance on Howard Stern’s radio program yesterday, producer Harvey Weinstein announced an upcoming “big movie” starring Meryl Streep that will make the National Rifle Association “wish they weren’t alive.”
“I don’t think we need guns in this country,” Weinstein told Stern. “And I hate it. I think the NRA is a disaster area.”
Weinstein claims the film will be a “big movie like a ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.’” And he is confident gun sales will plummet. “Gun stocks — I don’t want to be involved in that stuff,” he said. “It’s going to be like crash and burn.”
Ironically, Weinstein is currently working on another project about Jewish people who defend themselves with firearms during the Holocaust. When Stern pointed out the hypocrisy, Weinstein insisted that it was like comparing apples and oranges. ”This is when you are marching people into Auschwitz,” Weinstein said. “I'd find a gun.”
“Where would you find a gun,” Glenn asked exasperatedly. “The reason they don't have guns is because the Weimar Republic registered everybody, and the Nazis took the guns.”
As Glenn explained, Weinstein’s comments prove he is not familiar with the particulars of gun confiscation in Nazi Germany.
“If Harvey understood that people were shot trying to turn their guns in because things were so crazy. The Germans had guns. Everybody had to register their guns. That's where it starts,” Glenn explained. “‘Tell us exactly what you have.’ People in the Weimar Republic said, ‘Register my guns? That's bad. What if it falls in the wrong hands?’ ‘Oh, we'll keep it safe right here in the big vaults of the government.’ ‘What happens if the government falls into the wrong hands?’ ‘That will never happen. That's crazy talk.’ The Nazis take over, and then they say, ‘Halt Jews. Turn in your guns.’”
“And if you know a Jew who had a gun or was hiding a gun, [they’d] kill him. Then it became, ‘Everybody turn in your guns because guns are bad, and we'll keep you safe.’ So everybody did,” he continued. “But by that time, the laws were so upside down… So people were coming in to the police station trying to turn their guns in and they were shot in the streets by another policemen because you were a danger. So people didn't know what to do.”
But being ignorant of that frightening reality is obviously bliss for Weinstein.
“Oh, Harvey. How did you become wealthy? How did you learn to tie your shoes having the logic that was on display with Howard Stern?
