On GBTV tonight, Glenn laid out four key ways in which the American people were start to enslave themselves: 1) slave to a master 2) slave to debt 3) slave to illiteracy and 4) slave to ignorance. While some of these concepts are well known, there are ways in which people across the world are allowing themselves to succumb to slavery.
Take, for example, the slave to a master. This is by far the most well known and while in the past this was a person enslaved to a plantation, Glenn pointed out today that there are people caught up in sex trade and those caught up in migrant labor. And rather than go after the companies that employ illegal workers and the politicians who refuse to enforce the border and emphasize legal immigration, the average American is left footing the bill as the administration circumvents Congress and decides to not deport illegal immigrants.
Glenn then moved onto "slave to debt", noting that the government is currently $16 Trillion in debt.
"The over $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities? Good luck. They've racked up a debt of over $50,000 per person in the United States. That's up over $15,000 per person since Obama took office," Glenn explained.
"So we know how bad they suck. But what about you? 43% of American households spend more than they take in each year. The average American will spend $600,000 on interest over their lifetime. We have an average of $25,000 on college loans and $6,472 on credit cards. That's the average," he added.
Glenn said that people in debt usually are forced to make tough and often horrible choices - like a woman who resorts to stripping to pay her way through medical school.
And the worst thing is that people are doing it to themselves. Rather than live on a budget, the American people are spending more than they take in every month, and if they are going to break free they have to stop.
He then moved on to #3 Slave to Illiteracy.
Glenn said that African Americans weren't allowed to read during slavery because the owners knew the more educated they were and the more they could read and write, the better chance they had at becoming free.
"Today our schools are failing us. America is one of the top spenders on education - $2 trillion in the last 44 years - but when it comes to results, we're not getting the payoff," Glenn said.
"Out of 34 civilized countries, American kids rank 25th in math, 14th in reading, and 17th in science," Glenn said.
And despite these statistics, no one is actually trying to fix the problems and education reform falls underneath the crushing weight of progressive policies and the might of the teacher's unions.
And finally, Glenn discussed the fourth way we are enslaving ourselves - the slavery to ignorance.
"How many friends do you know who don't pay attention to the news whatsoever? They couldn't tell you what's going on in Greece or the EU. They think QE3 is a game show or an english boat? Have no idea who George Soros is. If you don't know what's going on - guess what? Someone else is going to be making all the decisions for you," Glenn said.
